Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

Security, predictability, and control make Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) the ideal platform for VMware. Rapidly transpose VMware estates to the cloud without changes to best practices or tools. VMware environments operate in a securely isolated customer tenancy with predictable performance and costs. Customers manage cloud infrastructure and VMware consoles for complete administrative control.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution allows you to create and manage VMware enabled software-defined data centers (SDDCs) in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution Highlights

An Oracle Cloud VMware Solution gives you full access to the features of a VMware SDDC, along with the following benefits:

  • High availability: All VMware components are distributed across different fault domains within the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure region’s availability domains. vSAN converged storage technology replicates data across all of the ESXi hosts in the SDDC.
  • Scalability: You can start with 3 ESXi hosts and scale up to 64 hosts in a single SDDC.
  • Lift and shift: Migration of on-premises VMware workloads to a Oracle Cloud VMware Solution is seamless.
  • Full integration: Because the SDDC resides in a virtual cloud network (VCN), it can be configured to communicate with other Oracle Cloud Infrastructure resources such as compute instances, DB systems and Autonomous Databases, and so on.
  • Manageability: The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console provides workflows to facilitate SDDC creation and networking configuration.
  • Layer 2 networking: SDDCs are configured with VLANs, which support applications that need layer 2 networking to run in the public cloud.

Storage Virtualization Software: vSAN

Reduce storage cost and complexity with VMware vSAN, enterprise-class storage virtualization software that provides the easiest path to HCI and hybrid cloud.

VMware vSAN is a software-defined, enterprise storage solution that supports hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) systems. vSAN is fully integrated with VMware vSphere, as a distributed layer of software within the ESXi hypervisor.

VMware vSan

vSAN aggregates local or direct-attached data storage devices to create a single storage pool shared across all hosts in a vSAN cluster. A hybrid vSAN cluster uses flash devices for cache and magnetic drives for capacity. All-flash vSAN clusters use flash devices for both the cache and capacity. vSAN Express Storage Architecture uses NVMe-based TLC flash devices and high performance network interfaces. These architectures provide a flash-optimized, resilient shared datastore designed for the software-defined data center (SDDC).

VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes

VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes, also known as vVols, virtualizes SAN and NAS devices by abstracting physical hardware resources into logical pools of capacity. The Virtual Volumes functionality changes the storage management paradigm from managing space inside datastores to managing abstract storage objects handled by storage arrays.

With Virtual Volumes, abstract storage containers replace traditional storage volumes based on LUNs or NFS shares. In vCenter Server, the storage containers are represented by Virtual Volumes datastores. Virtual Volumes datastores store virtual volumes, objects that encapsulate virtual machine files.

Virtual Volumes Architecture

Virtual volumes are objects exported by a compliant storage system and typically correspond one-to-one with a virtual machine disk and other VM-related files. A virtual volume is created and manipulated out-of-band, not in the data path, by a VASA provider.

A VASA provider, or a storage provider, is developed through vSphere APIs for Storage Awareness. The storage provider enables communication between the ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, and the vSphere Client on one side, and the storage system on the other. The VASA provider runs on the storage side and integrates with the vSphere Storage Monitoring Service (SMS) to manage all aspects of Virtual Volumes storage. The VASA provider maps virtual disk objects and their derivatives, such as clones, snapshots, and replicas, directly to the virtual volumes on the storage system.

NSX Malware Prevention

NSX Malware Prevention can detect and prevent known malicious files and unknown malicious files. Unknown malicious files are also referred to as zero-day threats. To detect malware, NSX Malware Prevention uses a combination of the following techniques :

  • Hash-based detection of known malicious files
  • Local analysis of unknown files
  • Cloud analysis of unknown files
Concept diagram of NSX Malware Prevention

On the north-south traffic, the NSX Malware Prevention feature uses the IDS/IPS engine on the NSX Edges to extract or intercept the files that are entering the data center. On the east-west traffic, this feature uses the capabilities of the NSX Guest Introspection (GI) platform. If the file bypasses scrutiny on the NSX Edge and reaches the host, the file is extracted by the GI thin agent on guest VMs.

Cloud Smart. Transform Faster.

Deliver your application on any cloud, anywhere. From the core and the RAN to the edge and the cloud, VMware can help you be cloud smart and transform faster.

What is Telco Cloud?

Telco cloud is a next-generation network architecture that combines software-defined networking, network functions virtualization, and cloud native technology into a distributed computing network. Since the network and the computing resources are distributed across sites and clouds, automation and orchestration are required.

This evolution refers to the deployment of virtualized and programmable network infrastructure that takes advantage of automation and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, it encompasses the adoption of innovative cloud business practices that change the way networks operate.

Fundamental Shift in The Telco Landscape

Telcos are facing an increasingly complex market. They are seeing declining growth of core services while seeing an increasing demand for new digital and enterprise services. Unfortunately, most communication service providers (CSPs) are unable to effectively meet these new challenges due to rigid hardware-based network infrastructures that limit efficient operational processes and that have a high cost to build and operate.
